L.A. Landmarks:
Lost and Almost Lost
As a board member of Photo Friends of the Los Angeles Public Library, I had the great opportunity a few years ago to curate an exhibit drawing exclusively from the library’s amazing photo collection.
Board members base these projects on their interests; naturally, I chose historic Los Angeles with a preservation bent.
The exhibit ran in the Central Library’s History and Genealogy department from July 2017 through January 2018.
The accompanying book (updated in 2020) has 140 photos and brief stories of 30 historic places in Greater L.A.
From beloved icons to hidden gems, the book offers a glimpse of the many landmarks we’ve lost — and saved, thanks to the very hard work of a lot of people. You can read the introduction here.
The book’s a steal at just $15, and part of each sale benefits Photo Friends. I get nothing but the glory. You can buy it at the Library Store.
I’ve also presented on the topic to history, architecture, and photography buffs. If you’re interested in a show-and-tell with your group, let me know.
